The language of mathematics is the system used to communicate mathematical ideas. It consists of a combination of everyday language, technical terms and symbols, and grammatical conventions that are unique to mathematical discourse.
This can make it difficult to understand. In this course, we describe the characteristics of the academic language required in mathematics classrooms. More specifically, we present the key features that characterise mathematics, such as symbols, vocabulary, grammatical structures and discourse.
