Study of Literary Texts - Dr Messaoudi Merwan
This module introduces students to the study and interpretation of literary texts within the context of Modernism, one of the most influential movements in twentieth-century literature. Through a close reading of selected works by James Joyce and Joseph Conrad, students will explore the stylistic innovations, thematic complexities, and philosophical underpinnings that characterize Modernist writing.
The course examines key issues such as narrative experimentation, stream of consciousness, psychological depth, alienation, imperialism, and the crisis of representation. By analyzing how Joyce and Conrad redefine form, perspective, and meaning, students will gain insight into the broader cultural and historical conditions that shaped Modernist aesthetics.
Particular attention will be paid to Joyce’s exploration of identity and urban consciousness and Conrad’s interrogation of moral ambiguity and colonial experience. The module also encourages students to engage critically with literary theory and narrative technique, fostering analytical and interpretive skills essential to the study of modern literature.
