The phase of the emergence of Algerian journalism

this era was marked by a series of major events, which we summarise as follows:

*Issuance of new media legislations: the Native Law and its eAects on individual freedom and the discrimination between native French and subjects, the French media law and its impact on government licensing

 * The Echo of the Arab Renaissance During Sheikh Muhammad Abduh's Visit

Accumulation of some technical and editorial experience in journalistic matters

That press run by Algerian Muslims in terms of administrative and financial management, while in terms of editorial and distribution, its content is related to Algerian Islamic issues, their public affairs, and their relationship with the colonial presence in Algeria, with absolute recognition of this presence.

Indigenous press

Indigenous press :This term refers to newspapers managed entirely by Algerian Muslims in terms of administration, financing editing, and distribution. The content of

these newspapers focused on Algerian Islamic issues, public affairs, and the relationship between Algerians and the colonial presence, while fully acknowledging French rule. This type of press experienced significant growth and development after its emergence in 1893 with the establishment of "Al Haqq"in Annaba. It played a crucial role in highlighting the suffering of Algerian Muslims under colonial oppression, repression, and land confiscation by the French authorities. This growing awareness unsettled the French government, prompting the French Parliament to send an investigative commission. "Al-Haqq" presented a comprehensive report to the commission, outlining the causes of Muslim grievances in Algeria. However, it refrained from pointing directly to French colonial rule as the main cause, instead attributing the suffering to two factors: the absence of laws regulating Muslim land ownership and the hostile stance of certain colonial officials toward Algerian Muslims.

We mention the most important newspapers that were established within this trend:

- The newspaper Al-Haq (Annaba) which disappeared after French pressure a year after its launch,

- The newspaper Al-Maghrib also stopped after a year of its launch.

- The Al-Misbah newspaper lasted only a few months.

The true institutionalisation of the nationalist press occurred in 1907 with the emergence of the newspaper "Kawkab Al-Afrikiyah" in Algiers, which went through three phases: the phase of initiation and sponsorship, the phase of repression and resilience (1923-1935), then the maturity phase (1935 – just before World War II), and finally the phase of decline.
