L3 Literary Studies (Theory and Practice)
The module is structured around three major literary traditions:
-
African Literature, studied through Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, which explores pre-colonial Igbo society, the disruptive impact of colonialism, and the clash between indigenous and European worldviews.
-
Caribbean Literature, examined through Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, a postcolonial rewriting of Jane Eyre that foregrounds silenced voices, creole identity, and issues of gender, race, and displacement.
-
African American Literature, analyzed through Beloved by Toni Morrison, which interrogates slavery, trauma, memory, and historical haunting through postmodern narrative strategies.
